The Energy GeoHackathon
The SPE Europe Energy GeoHackathon aims at educating and disseminating knowledge to all the participants on how Data Science applications can support Geothermal Energy Developments and drive the Energy Transition.
The event is organized by a diverse team of volunteers from different SPE Sections in Europe and from International Technical Sections moved by the desire to “make the Energy Transition happen” in a datafied and sustainable way.
Context
Turning Deep Geothermal Energy into Sustainable Heating & Cooling
Deep geothermal energy has the potential to provide reliable, local and low-carbon thermal energy for urban areas.
Unlocking this potential means designing an integrated energy system that brings together geothermal production, district heating and cooling, heat pumps, thermal storage and surface infrastructure, optimised around real energy demand, operational requirements and economics.
Challenge
Can Agentic AI reason across models, data and engineering tools to design an integrated geothermal heating and cooling system?
Starting with a deep geothermal doublet for direct-use heat production, create an Agentic AI workflow that transforms geothermal resources into an integrated heating and cooling solution for an urban district.
The AI Agent, or team of collaborative Agents, must:
-
Match geothermal energy production with changing demand
-
Identify complementary technologies
-
Select and execute suitable engineering models
-
Compare alternative system configurations
-
Evaluate system performance
-
Recommend and explain the final design
Practical Information
-
Participants will have access to the GEMINI Geothermal Digital Twin Platform
-
The Agentic AI system can interact with GEMINI to obtain information, configure simulations, perform calculations and evaluate geothermal-system behaviour. GEMINI therefore acts as part of the engineering environment available to the agent rather than simply as a dataset.
-
Part of the challenge is recognising when additional capabilities are needed. Agent(s) should determine when to use GEMINI and when to complement it with new engineering models, calculations, correlations, datasets or external tools to solve the problem effectively.

Flagship SPE Data Science Event in Europe since 2021

Unlike previous editions, where preparation and the hackathon were organised over a period of 8 weeks, the SPE Europe Energy GeoHackathon Express Edition will combine one focused bootcamp and the hackathon in 1 week. This shorter format places greater emphasis on rapid experimentation, interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrating a working concept within a limited period.
During the bootcamp, participants will receive a concise introduction to:
-
Deep geothermal direct-use systems and the GEMINI digital twin
-
Further explanation of the challenge and an opportunity to ask questions for clarification
Teams will then use the GeoHackathon to develop, test and demonstrate their Agentic AI solution.
2026: Energy GeoHackathon Express Edition

Participants attending the Bootcamp AND completing the Hackathon challenge
will be awarded with a Digital Certificate of Training issued by
SPE Data Science & Engineering Analytics Technical Section and sharable on LinkedIn
